Steering and Suspensions

This course covers the theory of operation of the vehicle chassis. Student will be taught to inspect and repair or replace tires and wheels, shocks and struts, and various other suspension and steering system components.  Wheel alignment is also introduced in this course.  Students will complete the course through various NATEF tasks sheets and performance examinations.

Brakes

This course covers brake system theory of operation. Students explore the basics of friction, Pascal’s theory and hydraulic theory. Student will also learn about the disc and drum brakes theory of operation, and service.  General brake system diagnostics is also introduced.  Students will complete the course through various NATEF tasks sheets and performance examinations. It also covers power braking systems and anti-lock braking systems theory of operation.  Continued brake system diagnostics gives students a chance to apply their knowledge to troubleshooting scenarios.

JUNIOR LEVEL COURSES

Engine Construction/ Engine Performance

This course continues the exploration of engine construction by examining engine lubrication and cooling systems, engine configurations, removal and installation.  General engine testing and diagnostics are also covered moving students into the examination of engine performance.   Students will complete the course through various NATEF tasks sheets and performance examinations (ASE Student Certification exam course). It also combines the theory of operation of the engine with computer controlled engine systems. Students will learn about on- board diagnostic systems (OBD-II), fuel systems, sensors, ignition systems, intake and exhaust systems, emissions and alternative fuels. Students will complete the course through various NATEF tasks sheets and performance examinations (ASE Student Certification exam course).

Electrical and Electronics

This course covers automotive electrical system theory of operation. Students learn about the basic physics of electricity and ohms law. They learn about batteries, wiring diagrams, wire repair and basic troubleshooting techniques. The students will complete the course through various NATEF tasks sheets and performance examinations. It covers specific automotive electrical subsystems such as starting systems, charging systems, lighting, instrumentation, accessories, and computer controlled systems.  On board diagnostics, electrical test equipment and troubleshooting techniques are also covered in this course to prepare students for work based learning and or skills completions in their senior year.  Students will complete the course through various NATEF tasks sheets and performance examinations (ASE Student Certification exam course

SENIOR LEVEL COURSES

Master Service Shop (1&2) RAS76T RAS77T

Here students will be able to use skills from their 9th, 10th and 11th year shop classes. Students will encounter the same conditions that a technician faces daily.  Community residents receive discounts on repairs as part of community service.  In addition to maintenance and repair, students will perform electrical troubleshooting and emissions repairs for the NYS DMV Vehicle Inspection Program.

Automotive Internship (1&2) RAS76TY RAS77TY

This course places students into the field of Automotive Repair to exercise their diagnosis and repair skills in a real job setting.  Job site locations may be compensated and are scheduled in either early morning or afternoon sessions.  Coordinator and supervisor evaluations complete assessment of student performance.
